Chloe has been working with me at Expressions of Wildlife and Taxidermy Tech for about 2 1/2 years. She developed a strong interest in Taxidermy as early as 9 years old and didn’t waste any time getting started on skinning projects, skeletal articulation and other projects that most young girls would not find at all interesting. She loves animals of all kinds, and really wants to understand everything about them. She has a room full of interesting pets… snakes, turtles, a chameleon and multiple species of exotic fish. I think she could talk all day about them… not just anatomy, but physiology and behavior and their habits. This is the same kind of passion she puts into her work. She is a very skilled flat artist and sculptor… her paintings and her drawings are amazing, and this combined with her deep desire to really understand her animal subjects from the inside out is what makes her such a good taxidermist. Molding, casting and sculpting are strengths for her. She mounts most of our lifesize animals, big and small, and does most of the open mouth work. She is very good with waterfowl and replica fish and though the gameheads haven’t been a consistent assignment for her, she can do them and has worked on everything from Bison to Eland to Whitetails. She is also a very good instructor in our Basic Predator/ Lifesize Mammal and Basic Waterfowl courses. This past week was her first competition and having watched essentially every minute of the 220 or so hours she had in this piece and knowing that she herself understood that it wasn’t enough, I have a whole new level of respect for her as an artist and as a professional. I suspect we will see big things from Chloe Smith in the years to come...and perhaps one day she might be the boss and I might be working for her instead! And yes… I brag on her a lot because she truly amazes me.

Tomorrow is Friday and there are only about 3 working days left before we travel to Sheffield for the Alabama Convention. It will be my first convention in 22 years and my sole motivation for going was exclusively in support of two people. For the past 3 months Chloe Smith and Ashley Rollins have been working on their first competition pieces. Neither of them took the easy “safe” path…Chloe’s mount is an open mouth lifesize fox and is completely original. The only thing she did not mold and cast was the eyes and I had to talk her out of doing that…not because I didn’t think she could do it (next time she will) but because there just wasn’t enough time. Ashley went with the toughest category…Whitetail deer . It is in pedestal, a sharp turn, altered changeout head and cast nose.
Both of them built their habitat…Ashley’s water scene and mushrooms are amazing and Chloe…she is building a tree😳…bark and all, custom molded and cast. The work they have done is stunning. I wish we could share it with you, but it’ll have to wait until after the convention.
So as I sit here tonight reflecting on the last three month thinking about all of the researching, planning testing, practicing and hard work they have both done, I want to go on the record with this…
Mission accomplished!
No matter what the scoresheets show next week when it is all over, you are both amazing and I am very proud of you. Everything you have done over the last 3 months has not been to prepare you for a score, a ribbon or notoriety but rather, an extraordinary future. You have gained valuable experience and insight on time and process management which will help you achieve much greater heights in your next competition mounts.
You have both inspired me.
All of you that have you put it all out there to be judged in competition, you have my utmost respect for your dedication and determination and for humbling yourselves to make you better at what you do.
